Today I learned that I am apparently comfortable ANYWHERE in a book store that isn't the Romance section.
I've been doing research at Dorchester and Harlequin and the like to try and find the 'type' of romance that the Nano Novel of Doom will fall into if I stick to the plan. The closest I've come up with was the Sillhouette Bombshell imprint out of Harlequin, because the imprint I would be writing towards for Dorchester doesn't exist yet and won't until next year. The Sillhouette Bombshell imprint claims to be about women saving the day, with romance in the story, but not in the heart of it. I was down for that. Hell, I'll try aything once so long as it's proven not to kill me, so I pulled a list of authors off the site and took my little sticky note to the Barnes and Noble to do some shopping.
As my luck would have it, they didn't have anything by any of those authors at the bookstore, so I was left staring at shelves and shelves of covers with hunky chests and fields of flowers and noir like legs. In that instant all of those books that I knew I didn't want to read became 'the others'. And I'm sure Sartre is rolling in his grave for my misappropriation of his great idea. But yes. It also doesn't help that in my Barnes and Noble the Romance section is right around the corner to the Manga section and my eyes kept slipping over to the
Saiyuki covers. Not that I've ever read that title, but those types of guys are more my speed, if I'm going for gratuitous eye candy. And really, couldn't I learn just as much about romance from watching
Samurai X again?
The book I settled on looks like it will be a quick read, and it has Vampires in it, which is the closest I could find to what I wanted to do. It isn't actually close to what I want to do at all, but there you have it. I also noticed that there are TONS of romances about vampires. There were a few about ghosts, and one abot a woman who's the keeper of the Chalice of Eternal Youth, but nothing even close to what I have planned. And why vampires? Sure, vampires are hot, but lets mix it up. What about a love triangle that includes a werewolf and banshee? Why are all the ancient gods so lonely all of a sudden? And where on earth does a djinn get a good cup of tea and a shag? Seriously guys.
( And now for some chaste Remus/Sirius... )
