Today I learned that I am apparently comfortable ANYWHERE in a book store that isn't the Romance section.
I've been doing research at Dorchester and Harlequin and the like to try and find the 'type' of romance that the Nano Novel of Doom will fall into if I stick to the plan. The closest I've come up with was the Sillhouette Bombshell imprint out of Harlequin, because the imprint I would be writing towards for Dorchester doesn't exist yet and won't until next year. The Sillhouette Bombshell imprint claims to be about women saving the day, with romance in the story, but not in the heart of it. I was down for that. Hell, I'll try aything once so long as it's proven not to kill me, so I pulled a list of authors off the site and took my little sticky note to the Barnes and Noble to do some shopping.
As my luck would have it, they didn't have anything by any of those authors at the bookstore, so I was left staring at shelves and shelves of covers with hunky chests and fields of flowers and noir like legs. In that instant all of those books that I knew I didn't want to read became 'the others'. And I'm sure Sartre is rolling in his grave for my misappropriation of his great idea. But yes. It also doesn't help that in my Barnes and Noble the Romance section is right around the corner to the Manga section and my eyes kept slipping over to the Saiyuki covers. Not that I've ever read that title, but those types of guys are more my speed, if I'm going for gratuitous eye candy. And really, couldn't I learn just as much about romance from watching Samurai X again?
The book I settled on looks like it will be a quick read, and it has Vampires in it, which is the closest I could find to what I wanted to do. It isn't actually close to what I want to do at all, but there you have it. I also noticed that there are TONS of romances about vampires. There were a few about ghosts, and one abot a woman who's the keeper of the Chalice of Eternal Youth, but nothing even close to what I have planned. And why vampires? Sure, vampires are hot, but lets mix it up. What about a love triangle that includes a werewolf and banshee? Why are all the ancient gods so lonely all of a sudden? And where on earth does a djinn get a good cup of tea and a shag? Seriously guys.

sopdetly a drabble, and since the NNoD and the smut are apparently playing keep away with my brain, this is what I managed to squeeze out. *glares at muses* I want my happiness back, and I want it now, damnit!
Because of the Rain
It was raining, so they took the train. The Hogwarts Express trundled through the black of the cloud covered Scottish countryside as the fat water droplets threw themselves against the windows and cars, trying to slow it's progress. They wouldn't succeed.
Very few of the Order members had elected to go this route to the meeting at Hogwarts. Sirius had wanted to take the bike, but Remus put his foot down and reminded him of the stings and cuts from the last sodden bike ride. Sirius folded. It was just as well, they both needed the sleep.
They had the car to themselves and Remus was curled up in one of the corners watching through the spattered and reflective glass as the little bit of the world that he could make out passed by. Sirius was leaning against him, his back propped up on Remus' thigh and his head lolling somewhere near shoulder height. His legs were stretched across the rest of the bench. Even though Remus' side had begun to ache some kilometers back he didn't push Sirius away. Sirius' wet hair was matted over his eyes and his bottom lip had fallen slightly, giving his face a look of awe.
Remus leaned over and kissed the top of Sirius' head before finally forcing his eyes shut. Every extra quiet moment was another lifetime together in a war that threatened to take everything.
It was raining, so they took the train. Remus had never been so thankful for the dreary fall weather.

Hell is other people...quoting Sartre, too. (JK)
Date: 2006-10-26 12:39 am (UTC)I thought the romance industry's fixation with vampires had to do with all the sexual symbolism (phallic stakes being thrust into people, penetration, sucking, et. al.). Or maybe it's just because vampires are usually hot boys who don't age. That would be enough for me.
But, if it came down to romance novel vampires vs. Saiyuki though, well, we both know which one I'd pick!

Date: 2006-10-26 02:25 pm (UTC)But really. Hehe. Although I wonder if maybe it's because any novels with a romance element that include those elements are considered to be more of a sci fantasy type thing than a romance type thing. Publishing niches give me a headache.
