Everyone knows the most accurate way to do science is LJ polls, and since [livejournal.com profile] barbed_whispers is clearly just MAKING THINGS UP I thought I'd come here to verify.

[Poll #1917179]

In other terrifying news, someone mashed up Cotton Eyed Joe and Gangnam Style, because why not I guess?

I still love the mashup. I love it so much.

I USED to know the dance. Which is why I said yes. Because I'm sure that if I were thrown in with a bunch of people who knew it I'd end up being able to figure it out again. ;)

I did know the dance but I don't anymore. But I figured knowing it at one time counted.

That is what I wanted to say, too. After all, it was a long time and many less kilos ago.

And by "the dance of my people", I of course mean the dances of 16th century Western Europe (France and Britain weren't that different dance-wise at the time). Because that is what I do as a reenactor.

Most of those group dances really aren't -- I just wanna know how kids my age knew the dance? It's really weird. Like how do we know ANY of these dances? Just...how? Who taught us? I just know I follow what everyone else is doing, so...

The only stupid dance I learned as a kid that I still mostly remember is the macarena.

i can't speak for anyone else, but we learned some dances like this in school. not this one in particular, but we learned the achey breaky heart and the electric slide and a couple of other random dances. it was a unit in gym class all through elementary school!

Wow, hard to find a video more 90's.

Also, damn you, flashing back to middle school.

OH GOD I SANG ALONG TO THE "His friends were SOOOO FINE" PART. WHY DO I STILL KNOW THIS?

My sister pulled me aside before my first middle school dance and said to me, "Since this is a dance, you'll need to know the Macarena." And then she showed me how to do it using a teddy bear.

Surprise, surprise, this was 1996.

I know the song, and knew there was a dance, but the only reason I actually knew the dance was because it was my niece's favorite song for a while when she was like 5 and she taught me the dance. :-P That and the Cha Cha Slide thingame. (They (my niece and nephew) love Gangnam Style, too, and sang it when I took them to karaoke. They would also dance it around the house. A lot. My sister wanted to kill me for introducing the song to them.)

Also, this post needs more Bucky!

This ^

or the Virginia Reel, because that's what they teach you at private schools in old Southern cities like where I grew up.

Also I'm not sure if the dance I know to Cotton-Eye Joe is the one everyone else knows? Because it's a line dance. There's a lot of linedancing around here in backwoods Ohio where I live now. >.>

I think I skipped the era where it was big at weddings. I still end up doing YMCA and sometimes even the Macarena, but no Cotton-Eyed Joe.
