I just wanted to see his face, guys. And Band of Brothers is the best thing ever. I just always forget about how it's amazingly sad.

See, I legitimately thought that this would be a GOOD IDEA.

But yeah, I realized pretty soon that it wasn't.

NO. YOU SHUT UP.

Who cares!? I care, baby. Don't let them be mean to you.

Close your mouth, honey. You'll catch flies that way.

Writer. Writer. Writer.

And then I got to him giving the kid the chocolate and was just about to break down. Until...

Thanks, Fassy. Thanks for bringing me back.

And now I have a serious inclination to watch Band of Brothers. Maybe also The Pacific. There goes my weekend!

You didn't need that weekend anyway!

I'm going to New Jersey this weekend, so I can't just rewatch it. And I just checked iTunes to see how much it would cost to put on the ipod to take with me, but it's $60, which I cannot let myself spend before Boston and New York next month. SO ALAS. I WILL JUST HAVE TO WEEP INTO MY PILLOW WHEN I GET BACK.

Also, I should really be a big girl and finish The Pacific. I just got so afraid of the feelings.

I wanted more out of The Pacific than I got, I think. I've read all the source material (Helmet For My Pillow, With The Old Breed, You'll Be Sor-ree!, Islands of the Damned, I can go on because I'm married to a Marine you have no idea how many books about them we own!) and it was awesome, but it didn't translate to the screen as well as I thought it should have. They focused too much on the homefront/love story/whatever, which is a valid aspect of the story, but not to the exclusion of the battle scenes.

On the other hand, the Peleliu landing is OMG AMAZING and so is Iwo Jima for the few seconds we see of it (not a spoiler because it's history: John Basilone was killed on Iwo Jima).

Also, I am so super pissed off that they showed Sledge and Snafu and all of them cleaning the barrels and then never showed what happened when they slacked off on it - those former oil barrels were used to hold their water after the invasion of Peleliu, so their water was all nasty and gross. EVERY SINGLE ONE of the above mentioned books bitches about that, but it was nowhere to be found in the series. >:(

Also, you will have ALL THE FEELS when they get back to the US at the end of the water. Train ride. You'll know it when you see it (if you can see it through the TEARS).

Hee. Please feel free to take over my posts any time. I like seeing you about. :D Boy has Helmet For My Pillow and a few others. I'll plan on stealing them to read at some point.

I miss you! We need to get together next time I'm in CFL!

Helmet For My Pillow is very good, but I think I liked With The Old Breed more. Of course, I read them years ago, so I really have no idea. I did really like You'll Be Sor-ree! by Sid Phillips (he's also in The Pacific) and Islands of the Damned by R.V. Burgin (again, in the Pacific, and also the source of much of the scenes featuring Snafu).

I understand why they did the show the way they did, but I still sort of wish they had just picked one unit to follow, like they did in Band of Brothers. There were several that hit all the major talking points - Guadalcanal, Tarawa (I would cry FOREVER watching Tarawa), Saipan, Tinian, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, etc. The Pacific was so huge and there was so much going on, though, so I do understand why they did what they did. I just don't think it gave the same sense of knowing the characters and worrying about them that Band of Brothers did. Still, I loved it. Peleliu Airfield, you were amazingly done. <3

My dearest wish is that the next WWII collaboration they decide on will be the Coast Guard and Merchant Marine. Totally badass. (It makes me rage that the Merchant Marine were not considered veterans of WWII and, for the most part, still aren't. They had the highest casualty percentages of any US service, including the Marine Corps, and they got completely shit on when they got home.) Of course, I'll take the Army Air Corps in Europe, too. My great grandpa was an engine mechanic turned waist gunner on a B-17, so that'd be awesome to see, too.

Yes! Let us know when you come back!

That's a thing I hear a lot about The Pacific, that you didn't have as much time to become invested in the different groups the way you did with Band of Brothers. And I understand why, as you've said, there are just too many places to incorporate, but some of it just feels disparate. The thing that Band of Brothers did so well was take the chaos of war and pull it together and through. I honestly did not expect to love that series as much as I do.

I want to see ALL the things focusing on ALL of the areas of the military! Which is why I need to just get on reading the books, really. I didn't know that about the Merchant Marines though. Gods, why?

You should check out Valor Studios. They have amazing, amazing, AMAZING military art, mostly WWII. Josh really wants "Off The Beach!" and the Portraits of Valor set.

You can read about the Merchant Marine in WWII here. I think it would be an awesome story to tell. Where's my red phone to Tom Hanks?!

He looks like such a baby here! I mean, I know he's not, but wow does he look young in comparison to what I'm used to seeing on OUAT.

I had the same thought when I was looking through them. He kind of is, though, since he's 36 now and was 23 when they were filming BoB. That's quite a bit of time to grow.

Hadn't realized there was that much of a gap, whoa. I just know that Fassy and James don't look near as different in age as Eion. XD (I think James has filled out, and Fassy has ALWAYS had that thin look to him.)

James has filled out a bit, but his face still just looks really young, which is part of it. And Fassy has always looked thin and pointy. It's interesting, because most men, if you watch things from the beginning of their careers, and then again later, seem to widen in the face. Even if they don't put on weight or muscle or what have you, something about their jaws just seems to settle. I'm not sure Fassy is ever going to do that. Heh. Not that I'm complaining.
