I like your views on steampunk, um, a lot. It's rather unfortunate that there ARE people who will call you (general you here) on how accurate your science, or your mechanics, is, or how true to Victorian culture you are, etc. etc. etc. I also feel your pain when it comes to The Wonder being drained away or being bogged down in too much detail.
