Back to day 2!

Saturday didn't start as early as Friday, but it was still about 7:30 when I dragged myself out of bed. The first half of the day was kind of a blur. [livejournal.com profile] barbed_whispers and I sat in on the Weird West panel (which you can read a little more about here), and then [livejournal.com profile] theemdash and I showed up to the DarkHorse presents panel early and busted in on some sort of Joss Whedon acting game. I'm telling you, this whole busting in on panels we know nothing about strategy really worked out in our favor for the most part. The DarkHorse presents panel featured both Scott Allie and Georges Jeanty and was entertaining and informative, so I can't slight them for anything. I do wish it had been a little more about DarkHorse titles that aren't tied to some sort of Whedonverse, though. *cough*UA*cough* I realize it was a part of the Whedonverse track, but it was the only DarkHorse panel that I could find this year.

Saw these two on the way the to the Weird West panel. I also saw a Kyouya and a Tamaki later, but didn't want to stop in a crowded area to harass them.

This girl was in the Weird West panel I went to and I LOVE the back of her outfit. Let me tell you, there's not really a non-creepy way to ask someone if you can take a picture of their front and back. I tried to be less creepy, though. >.>

I've decided that if I do pull together a costume next year it will be based around one or two of the male characters in my novel, but I still like getting ideas for girly steampunk dress. I do have female characters that can't run around naked, after all.

I almost lost my life trying to make it to the Stargate track room. The Patrick Stewart line mixed with all the people trying to get to the Peachtree Center for lunch mixed with I don't know what made for a very crowded hundred square feet of space. I have never felt so panicked in a crowd in my life.

One of the symbiotes made by [livejournal.com profile] mckays_lab. If you like Stargate at all, you should definitely go to his journal and check out his handy work.

These guys made me squeak with joy. I forgot that Mighty Boosh had been on Adult Swim. I'm always glad to see more appreciation of it, though.

The afternoon was kicked off by Abney Park on the concourse. It was the first concourse show I'd ever been to, and I showed up right at start time, so I hung in the back and pushed in as close as I could. There were people--Hyatt employees or Dragon*Con staffers, I'm not sure--walking along the back and shouting about where people could or couldn't stand and trying to move anyone who stood behind me along. Luckily, I slipped below their radar.

This year at D*C was the year of the accordion. I totally approve.

The gentleman in the back on the left is Davis Patterson from Ghost Project. He sat in with them and did some extra percussion.

Abney Park performing Aether Shanty, which is the title track on the new album. (I am way excited about that new album, by the way. I hope they don't have any more trouble with it.)

Abney Park (attempting to) play Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. This kind of made my weekend, you guys.

Abney Park performing The Ballad of Captain Robert.

The afternoon could be characterized as 'all steampunk all the time'. I showed up early for the Alternate History Classics panel and ended up crashing in on an author panel. I believe her name was Diana Gabaldon. It was historical romance fare, which is really not my sort of thing, but it was alright.

There were some army cosplayers in the room when I got there. I may have fallen in love with their lace up spats. I've decided that if I make a costume that's James-ish, it'll have lace up spats like this, since he's rather lower middle class.

The Rule, Victoria panel was my favorite panel of the evening, and you can read more about it here. It mostly dealt with the textuality of what we know of the Victorian era in the context of the machinery and things that we might not have at hand. Nicely academic.

[livejournal.com profile] barbed_whispers and I went to the Steampunk, Anachronistic and/or Retrofuturistic Music panel, which was hosted by Dimitri von Stadberg of The Extraordinary Contraptions. The band led us in a 19th century sing-a-long, which was good fun. Plus, the lyrics to 'Daisy, Daisy' were spotted with inappropriate quotation marks that reminded me of that blog, and entertained Lisa and I for hours.

After that, Lisa and tried waiting in line for the Cabaret and because of a late start on their end and a late getting into line on our end, missed it for the second year in a row. I swear, I don't think the powers that be want us to see that blasted Cabaret.

It was just as well though, because we had a show to catch! The rest of the evening was spent with the Hellblinki Sextet and Voltaire. I heard a rumour they're going on tour together later this year. Fingers crossed that they come near me!

The Hellblinki Sextet performing You Are My Sunshine. Sunshine is [livejournal.com profile] barbed_whispers favorite song, I think this version might now be her favorite of everything.

If you're a fan of Hitler and My Chemical Romance, you might like Voltaire's new haircut!

That's [livejournal.com profile] sweetnovicane up there with Voltaire!

Voltaire and the Hellblinki Sextet perform Coin Operated Goi.

Voltaire performing The USS Make Shit Up in honor of the new Star Trek movie. I feel that the lens flare in the video is clearly an ode. ;) This might actually be my favorite Star Trek song ever.

And that brings Saturday to an end. I stumbled up to my room much like I had the night before. Head over to my last post, which includes more Abney Park and Hellblinki Sextet, and a whole lot of ridiculous. ♥

If you let your female characters run around naked, you could probably sell to a whole new audience.

Ha.

"Amelia, where were you keeping that gun?" Derek asked, looking over her pale skin, now streaked with dust.

"You don't really want to know," she said. "Nate taught me."

The part of her talk I heard was very interesting. And her reading dealt with a birth, so you know that was full of crazy description. (Something about the woman being married to brothers? I don't even know. I know [livejournal.com profile] barbed_whispers was sad she missed that bit, though!)

Also, she passed around comic panel pages and art, so I'm assuming that if she hasn't already released a graphic novel, she's going to. I didn't get the context for that, though.

There was a Jareth too! But when I saw him I was way up on the Atrium level and he was way down on the Marquis level and my camera isn't that good. And I'll admit to not being sure if the MA/Louis XIV people are actually them, but the reason I took pictures of them was because my brain pinged on the fact that in our book, the upper class have French backgrounds.

And yes, get thee to a con! I would say you should come to Dragon*Con, since I know lots of people who come from all over for it, but I realize how it might be far away. But I'd love to hang out with you if you could.

I wouldn't call Gabaldon romance, but damn, there is an amazing romance at the center of her books. Mind you, I only read the first one--they take forever to read--but they are more along the lines of first-person, time-travel historical fiction. OUTLANDER, the first one, was fabulous. Just wonderful. I always thought I'd get around to reading the others but haven't. They are big and I am a slow reader due to no time to read.

She writes a mystery series, Lord John, also. Believe he is gay.

Very interesting person too--think she was an oceanographer or something before. Science of some sort.

You know if I went next year I'd always be at the writer tracks. I'll have to see what they are doing, if they even know yet. ;0

Hee! I didn't pull the romance thing from her, but from someone at the panel. Actually, I was trying to get to the front of the room to get a seat as people were leaving and I ended up getting caught mid-stream with the director of the track. She seemed perplexed that I was there when I didn't know who the writer was. Oops.

I actually quite like time travel stories, but it's the romantic bit that puts me off. The thing I can't get behind about romance is all the happy endings. I tried to write a romance once, everyone ended up dying. It's good that I know my limits, though. :p

If you went next year I might actually spend some time at the writer track. I doubt they'd know right now, but in a few months they'll probably start shaping things. COME C, COME. Actually, only come if it won't interfere with Nick time, but you know. Don't make me put on my whiny voice!

The tale of Jamie and Claire is brutal, to say things were happy for them...yes and no. It is so well-done, their story, and Gabaldon pulls no punches re: reality, and Claire's story (she is the focus, not the romance) that I am sitting here wanting to reread the damn thing myself. LOL. It is a long, unwindy tale that isn't boring one whit.

Funny thing--I was such an innocent back when I read it, I didn't get a very important aspect of the tale referencing to your friend up there's buggering comment. LOL. Oy! Such a ditz.

I'll seeee on D*C. Depends on finances, honestly--with TWO kids in university? I am scared to death of how we're going to do this. Not so much Tiff anymore, but Kelly. Hopefully being a poor widow single mum will be the key. I hope.

You have so many good videos and pictures! I'm glad we seemed to take different videos, though... I just finished uploading Happy Birthday (My Olde Friend). (I wish someone would have recorded the proposal during Abney Park's concourse show, though. So adorable~)

Voltaire and Hellblinki are indeed going on tour together, but I think Voltaire likes to stay up north most of the time. *Sigh.*

A lot of people go on tour and only get as far south as Atlanta, which makes me a sad panda, because I can't just up and drive 7 hours on a Wednesday night most weeks. :(

I ONLY EDITED THIS COMMENT FOUR TIMES. Sorry.
