You know, I'm just beginning to delve into this whole crazy genre/lifestyle that is steampunk, so I don't really have a favorite author. I had encountered steampunk in other forms of media and decided I wanted to write in that fashion before I was introduced to steampunk as a literary genre. I can't even really say if there are any 'steampunk' authors out there. I know quite a few other types of sci-fi authors tend to stray into the genre, and a novel that comes up often is The Difference Engine by William Gibson (who wrote one of the definitive cyberpunk novels, Neuromancer), and Bruce Sterling. I can definitely recommend a really good anthology though, called Steampunk, which was edited by Ann and Jeff Vandermeer. I have read most of that one, and it's a very good cross section of the genre, new and old.
