I'm beginning to realize just how overwhelming it can be as a genre. And I'm not sure about Final Fantasy, but I think that's because I'm not familiar with them, really. I mean, I saw Advent Children, and used to watch people play it so I could see the cut screens, but I don't know enough about the heart of the story to really say.
I do know that there are lots of things which incorporate bits of steampunk into other types of universes. The anime Ergo Proxy is one that comes to mind immediately. It's a very dystopic, post-cyberpunk sort of society, but some of it has crumbled enough to where factions of people have gone back to 'old' ways of doing things. Did you ever watch Ergo Proxy? I'll send it to you if you haven't. I quite enjoyed it.
